How should EP professionals navigate critical situations?

The security landscape for high-profile clients is complex and demanding, but how should EP professionals navigate critical situations? VIP individuals often find themselves in the public eye, they become prime targets for various security threats, ranging from physical attacks to cyber threats. The beginning of 2024 has already seen several well-publicised attacks.

• The English footballer Jack Grealish was subject to burglars targeting his residence, his Cheshire mansion during a Premier League match at Everton. Members of Grealish’s family and his fiancee, Sasha Atwood, were reportedly watching the televised match at the property when they heard a disturbance. An alarm was raised and an emergency response was launched with a helicopter, police dogs and a number of officers sent to the property, but no suspects were detected. The thieves reportedly made off with £1m worth of jewellery and watches.

• South Korea’s opposition leader Lee Jae-myung was stabbed in the neck during a visit to the city of Busan. Mr Lee, who narrowly lost the 2022 presidential election, sustained a 1cm laceration on the left side of his neck. He was airlifted to hospital, and the wounds were not lifethreatening. The 66-year-old man who attacked him said he had intended to kill Mr Lee, but the motive for the attack is unclear. The brazen daytime attack shocked the nation and prompted condemnation from political parties and politicians.

• A judge in Las Vegas was attacked by a defendant during his sentencing in a felony battery case after his plea was denied. Clark County district judge Mary Kay Holthus was pronouncing the sentence while convicting Deobra Delone Redden when he leaped over a defence table and the judge’s bench and landed atop her. Redden was wrestled to the floor behind the judge’s bench by court officials, who were seen throwing punches. The judge sustained minor injuries.

Sometimes, no matter how prepared you are, critical situations are unavoidable. But how do security personnel navigate scenarios such as these?

Thorough Threat Assessment:
Before implementing any security measures, it is crucial to conduct a comprehensive threat assessment. This involves identifying potential risks and vulnerabilities specific to the individual client. Threats can vary widely, from physical harm to reputational damage, making a thorough analysis essential for designing a robust security plan.

Tailored Security Plans:
Once the threat assessment is complete, the next step is to create a tailored security plan that addresses the unique needs of the high-profile or VIP client. This plan should cover every aspect of security, taking into account the client’s lifestyle, travel habits, and public appearances.

Trained and Experienced Security Personnel:
Experience is critical. High-profile clients require security personnel who are not only well-trained but also experienced in dealing with the unique challenges of protecting individuals in the public eye. Bodyguards, drivers, and other security staff should undergo specialized training to handle various scenarios, including potential attacks.

Advance Security Measures:
Prevention is key when it comes to protecting high-profile clients. Implementing advance security measures such as thorough background checks for staff, securing venues in advance, and utilising surveillance strategies can help mitigate potential threats before they escalate.

Secure Transportation:
VIP clients are often on the move, making secure transportation a top priority. Appropriately chosen vehicles, well-trained drivers, and established travel routes are essential components in reducing the risk of attacks during transit.

Cybersecurity Vigilance:
In the digital age, cyber threats are as significant as physical ones. High-profile individuals are susceptible to hacking, online harassment, reputational damage and information leaks. Robust cybersecurity measures, including secure communication channels and digital threat monitoring, are imperative to safeguard sensitive information.

Emergency Response Protocols:
In the event of an attack or emergency situation, having well-defined and practiced emergency response protocols is critical. Security personnel should be trained to react swiftly and efficiently, ensuring the safety of the client and those around them.

Collaboration with Local Authorities:
Building strong relationships with local law enforcement and emergency services is essential for a seamless and coordinated response to any security threat. Regular communication and collaboration can enhance the overall security infrastructure and provide a quick response in critical situations.

Constant Adaptation:
The security landscape is dynamic, and threats evolve over time. Regularly updating and adapting security measures is crucial to staying ahead of potential risks. This includes staying informed about emerging threats, updating technology, and adjusting security protocols as needed.

Protecting high-profile or VIP clients is a multifaceted challenge that requires a combination of strategic planning, skilled personnel, and continuous adaptation to evolving threats. By considering the unique circumstances of each individual client and implementing a comprehensive security plan, Security professionals can take steps to minimize (but not eradicate) risks for high-profile figures. Whilst each incident highlighted only resulted in minor injuries or the loss of valuables, they serve as a very poignant reminder that those within the public eye require thorough, robust and layered security strategies in place to ensure their safety.
