Luxury Yacht Bayesian sinks off the coast of Sicily

A tragic incident unfolded off the coast of Sicily when the luxury yacht Bayesian encountered severe weather conditions, resulting in the loss of one life and leaving six individuals missing. Our deepest sympathies are with the families of the survivors and all those impacted by this distressing event.

The 56-meter British-flagged yacht was carrying 22 people, including 12 passengers and 10 crew members, when it encountered a violent storm near Porticello, east of Palermo. Witnesses reported the yacht’s mast breaking amidst waterspouts and powerful winds, causing it to capsize and sink rapidly around 5:00 AM local time.

Rescue operations have saved fifteen individuals, but the search continues for the six still missing, including British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch. Divers are navigating challenging conditions as they comb through the wreckage, which rests 50 meters below the surface.

The loss of life includes Jonathan Bloomer, Judy Bloomer, Chris Morvillo, Neda Morvillo, Mike Lynch, and Hannah Lynch. Our thoughts are with the survivors and their families.

Italian authorities have launched an investigation into the incident, and we await further details to fully understand the circumstances surrounding this tragedy. Priavo will refrain from commenting until more information is released and a comprehensive report is prepared, once all facts are confirmed.

The Bayesian, commissioned in 2008 and operated by Revtom Ltd, served as a luxury vessel for high-end charters, accommodating up to 12 guests in six suites. As search efforts continue and the investigation unfolds, we remain committed to supporting all those affected and understanding the unpredictable risks of maritime activities that led to this devastating event.
