Refugee Week [Different Pasts, Shared Future]
Priavo are celebrating Refugee Week this week – an event with a nationwide programme of arts, cultural and educational events that celebrate the contribution of refugees to the UK. This has taken place very year since 1998 with the ultimate aim of creating a better understanding between different communities and encouraging successful integration, enabling refugees to live in safety and continue making a valuable contribution.
The Home Office have a “Community Sponsorship Scheme” which was launched in 2015 as part of the government’s commitment to resettle thousands of the most vulnerable refugees in the UK. It has enabled community groups including charities, faith groups, churches and businesses to take on the role of supporting resettled refugees in the UK.
There are few people in the world ‘more’ in need of our support than the thousands of families who have fled their war-torn homes in the hope of finding somewhere safe to raise their family. Worthing 4 Refugees is a local volunteer group who have a vision for the Worthing area to be a place of welcome, safety, integration and justice for refugees. Priavo Security became involved in this project to help assist refugees that have come to our home town looking for somewhere safe to live, raise their children, contribute and integrate with the local community.
Working closely with the local council this charity has provided refugees in the area with a comfortable warm safe home, English lessons for the family, trauma counsellors, integrating with community events, providing family days out and enrolling the children into local schools.
The theme of Refugee Week 2019 is ‘You, me and those who came before’, an invitation to explore the lives of refugees – and those who have welcomed them – throughout the generations. We hope you join us this week in providing an important opportunity for asylum seekers and refugees to be seen, listened to and valued.
