If you travel along the north bank of the river Clyde just west of Glasgow you will pass row after row of long, low, wooded huts, surrounded by high barbed wire fencing. They look almost identical to a World WarII POW camp. Inside the huts are hundreds of millions of pounds worth of Scotch Whisky, in casks, doing what it does best…ageing.

For twelve or sixteen or even twenty years, this Eldorado of alcohol is protected not by patrol officers or guard dogs, but solely by geese! Geese have been used as guard animals since ancient Greece. They are the most territorially protective, vicious, ornery creatures in existence. Guard dogs can be distracted, not geese. And a flock of them can make more noise than a tank regiment.

Although they are cheaper to buy and feed than dogs (you can purchase a guard goose for the poultry sum of £20) we do appreciate they are not necessarily suitable solutions for one’s private residence.
