Travel Risk Report: Puerto Rico

Our Travel Risk Report – Puerto Rico shows that the recent passage of hurricane Maria has resulted in countrywide devastation and travel to the country is not advised. Basic necessities such as water, food, and electricity are in short supply and a large-scale cleanup operation is currently underway. Other security concerns are present on the island, such as petty crime which includes bag snatching, pickpocketing and the theft of unattended items and although less common, violent crime, which is predominantly drug-or-gang-related and is most likely to take place in high – density, lower income areas of San Juan and Bayamón. Currently, kidnapping, terrorism, and conflict are not major concerns on the island. The medical facilities in Puerto Rico are widespread but are under pressure from recent events.

We suggest you avoid travel to Puerto Rico due to the recent passage of hurricane Maria and its effects. Only go to the country if you have made arrangements with a security provider and are up to date on the current situation.

We advise you to check for recommended vaccines before you travel and due to risks posed by Zika virus, pregnant women should reconsider their need to travel to the country. Please be aware this Travel Risk Report is a brief overview and our advice would be to thoroughly research your destination prior to travel. Our travel risk department can provide country reports, travel risk summaries, advice and support to help mitigate risk further.
